In some countries, you might have the opportunity to look after children on a farm as an au pair. Life on a farm can be a wonderful experience for children when we create a safe environment for them to play in.

Accidents on farms

However, farms are not child-proofed and there are many possible places where children may be injured on a farm.

The major causes of child deaths and injuries on farms are dams, farm vehicles, machinery, motorcycles and horses. Age and development characteristics also place certain children at greater risk.

If kids are able to access such vehicles as tractors, they should be inspected for safety before they are able to climb aboard. Of course, you must make sure there is no way for children turn farm vehicles on, so never leave keys in the ignition.

Dams

Swimming in dams is almost always a definite no no!! However, there are many wonderful experiences children can have with a supervised adult in an area that has been maintained and clear of danger.

Farm Vehicles

Farm vehicles are a great learning experience for children.  However, make sure they are turned off and there are no old parts of the vehicle that could cause injuries. Strong supervision at all times is the key.

All-terrain vehicles

Quad bikes or ATV’s are extremely dangerous for children. Children will, of course, be curious and want to go for a ride. Here is a great example of showing children how to ride a quad bike safely when they are much older and of course no engine running!!

Additional risks on a farm include access to:

  • Toxic chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers
  • Dangerous animals including horses and cows
  • Firearms and explosives
  • Dams, wells and other bodies of water
  • Constant supervision is the key to safety on a farm, particularly for children younger than 6 years old

Keep safe and have fun

Have a securely fenced house yard (safe play area) for young children to play, unless an adult is available to closely supervise them on farm at all times.

Have fun! There are some wonderful experiences children can have on a farm as long as they are well supervised!!

And remember to ensure that all children:

Always wear seat belts and restraints when in cars, utes and trucks.

Don’t ride on tractors, quad bikes or in the back of flat bed trucks.

Always wear helmets when riding bikes and horses.
